Paper Mill Playhouse (Millburn, New Jersey), a not-for-profit arts organization under the direction of Mark S. Hoebee (Producing Artistic Director) and recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is one of the country's leading regional theaters. A pioneer in the not-for-profit regional theater movement, Paper Mill Playhouse opened its doors in 1938 and has been recognized throughout the industry for the artistry of its productions and commitment to supporting the development of new works and emerging artists. Paper Mill Playhouse’s production of Disney’s Newsies moved directly to Broadway, winning two Tony Awards and remained at the top of the sales charts for Broadway for two years. The Tony Award–winning revival that thrilled Broadway audiences is coming to Paper Mill, where director John Doyle will remount his visionary production. This unforgettable and moving musical based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel and Academy Award–nominated film features a soul-raising, Grammy-winning score infused with jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues. This fable of young love is based on the experiences of Peter Noone, who was just 15 when he rose to international stardom as the lead singer of Herman’s Hermits—and England became the center of the rock and roll universe. Set against the backdrop of the exploding 1960s British music scene, this world-premiere musical features songs from Herman’s Hermits, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Petula Clark, The Moody Blues, and other legendary bands of the era. Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Half Time), choreographs and directs.

Based on the 1993 film starring Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson, this new musical is a smart, funny, tender-hearted celebration of love. The pair at the heart of the show are Joon, a young woman dealing with mental illness, and Benny, the big brother who’s determined to take care of her. When a charmingly eccentric stranger comes into their lives, he throws their carefully calibrated world off-kilter—maybe for the better. This heartfelt screen-to-stage adaptation was hailed by the Times of San Diego as “totally delightful… 100% enjoyable, poignant and affecting.”
