Cultural appropriation is often viewed as destructive and insensitive, but what happens if appropriating a culture is the only means of keeping it in existence?

El Pico sound systems originated in a small coastal city in Colombia called Barranquilla. But now authorities are cracking down on the El Pico culture, claiming it encourages violence.

In an attempt to save the El Pico from disappearing completely and at the same time change the cultural narrative of Colombia abroad, a group of Colombians living in Australia called South to South are building the first El Pico outside Colombia - in Melbourne.

The customised El Pico will debut at Melbourne Hispanic Fiesta this November.
